Answer first

The current answer

The Missing Tail is built for two players. Local play uses split-screen, Steam lists online co-op through Remote Play Together, and the official FAQ says one copy is enough on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox.

What co-op changes in the game

The public footage presents the cats as a working pair rather than two interchangeable avatars. The two views show coordinated traversal, pushing, environmental interactions, puzzles, and night sequences.

The official description also says players will complete quests, help animals, speak with townsfolk, and explore courtyards, castle spaces, streets, roofs, and hidden corners together. Exact chapter and puzzle counts have not been published.

A sensible pre-launch setup checklist

  • Use two controllers for a couch session when the final platform guidance recommends them.
  • For Remote Play Together, give the host the stronger upload connection and use wired networking when possible.
  • Confirm both players can hear game audio and communicate before starting a puzzle-heavy section.
  • Do not assume PC-to-console invitations will work unless cross-play is officially announced.
